Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches managers and staff how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide support , reassurance, and guide people to the help they may need on a first aid basis.

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis.

All MHFA courses

Mental Health First Aid courses have been developed by experts and people experienced in mental health issues. The training courses are evidence based on up to date research. Courses are constantly reviewed and updated to new investigation and statics.

There are 2.6 million MHFA trained people from 25 counties, including 330,000 people in England.

MHFA Campaign Where’s Your Head At?

Where’s Your Head At? is a campaign which will improve the mental health of the nation by ensuring employers look after the wellbeing of their workforce.

We all have mental health – In just the same way as we each have a physical fitness. Evidence also shows that the earlier a mental health issue – like stress, anxiety or depression – is detected the easier it is to manage and treat. We want to make it easy for you to talk about your mental health at work & ensure that there are trained colleagues on site who know how to point you in the direction of any help you might need.

MENTOR: MENtal health first aid in The wORkplace 2018
Researchers surveyed 139 participants from 81 organisations across England. The organisations were spread across 20 different industries in the private, public and third sectors.  Participants were asked what had changed in their workplaces as a result of MHFA England training. Responses included:
– 91% said there had been an increased understanding of mental health issues in their workplace
– 87% said more mental health conversations were happening at work
– 83% had noticed an improvement in procedures for signposting to further support

2018: International Journal of Workplace Health Management
Participants believed that MHFA training should be offered to all staff in an organisation, although they noted that this was not always practical or feasible. Participants noted several benefits of MHFAOs in their organisation including:
– Increasing support and encouraging help-seeking
– Improving knowledge, attitudes and skills
– Improving workplace culture
– As a global programme, MHFA can be implemented consistently across multinational organisations
