Understanding Learning Disability & Supporting Individuals

Who is This Course For?

This course is intended to support learners to become familiar with the requirements and gain an understanding on what a learning disability is and explores the impact of how attitudes and beliefs including stereo types of other people affects how we support individuals. This course explores how human rights, inclusion, participation, advocacy and empowerment are promoted and are central place of effective communication in supporting individuals with learning disabilities.

This understanding learning disability and the concept of supporting individuals course is aimed at staff that provide care and support to people who have learning disabilities within residential homes, supported living services, hospitals, community based settings, Educational settings, Day care services and individuals supported in their own homes.

Course outcome:

At the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by learning disability
  • List causes of learning disabilities
  • Describe the possible impact on a family on having a member with a learning disability
  • Identify legislation, policies and procedures that promote the human rights, equality and inclusion of individuals with a learning disability and how they have influenced the day to day quality of life for both individuals with a learning disability and their families.
  • Define the term profound, sever, moderate and mild disability
  • Explain the difference between the medical and social models of disabilities
  • Recognise how attitudes are changing and looking beyond the disability
  • Explain the different types of advocacy
  • Explain how a person centred approach to risk assessment differs to the traditional approach to risk assessment
  • Describe ways to promote empowerment and active participation into every day support with individuals with learning disabilies
  • Identify the importance of effective communication and ways of adapting verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Reflect and evaluate current ways of working

Course Duration:

The trainer will carry out an on-going assessment

Certificate of attendance will be issued to all learners that have demonstrated that learning has taken place throughout the session and course outcomes have been met.

The course can be delivered at locations to suit the client.
